Making your lawn greener requires extra effort to maintain it and time to devote to take care of it. Your lawn will have a better chance of greening up if you preserve it properly and provide plenty aeration of its roots to encourage optimum growth.

Here are some tips for making your lawn greener:

1) Watering

Make sure you water your lawn regularly and preferably very early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the hot times during day. In doing so, the water will hold in better and will green up your lawn more. Instead, if you water you lawn at noon when the sun is up, you can actually cause damage because the sun heats up the water and burns your lawn’s roots. You may also use a sprinkler system. If you don’t have one, buy one that can cover a really large area. Sprinkling your lawn for 5-10 minutes per day is quite enough to maintain it really green.

If there are any water restrictions in your area you should consider them and have a type of lawn that can be maintained with the amount of water that is available at your disposal.

2) Mowing

When mowing your lawn you may apply the techniques that golf course landscape professionals implement when cutting greens. In particular:

* Cut your grass regularly, at least once a week.

* Don’t cut your grass too short. Depending on your mower type, set the blade height accordingly. If you cut off more than a third of the height of the lawn, you may be decreasing your chances of achieving a greener effect. Make sure that your mower has sharpened blades and is in good condition.

* Cut your grass on a different direction every week. If your grass grows the same direction, it becomes weak and fragile. To be able to keep a track of the directions cut your grass in an alternate direction like a clock from 12 to 6, then opposite from 3-9, then opposite from 10-4, then opposite from 8-2. For instance, if you cut your lawn this week in a 12 to 6 direction, next week you will cut in a 3 to 9 direction and so on. In that way, you will always be cutting your grass on a different direction.

* Do the mowing either very early in the morning or late at night.

Overall, your lawn needs to be tidy and neat to become greener. Instead, if you keep it in a messy, chopped up state, it is more likely to develop diseases.

3) Fertilizing

It is very important to fertilize your lawn at least four times a year at the beginning of each season with a good quality product. There are certain fertilizers that are suited to different times of the year as well as commercial and organic garden products. So, it’s up to you to choose what you want for your lawn. However, make sure not to use too much fertilizer so that you don’t burn your lawn. Instead, if you follow the tips and instructions properly your lawn will be green and healthy.

Apart from watering, mowing and fertilizing, make sure you weed out any foreign plants from your lawn to let its roots breathe. Also, if you plan on using weed killers and poisons on your lawn, make sure to choose those that are less likely to affect your health and your lawn’s health because of their chemicals.

Question by Nick P: If you open a small business mowing lawns, what is the best/most common way to contract your customers?
I’ve been thinking about opening a business mowing lawns in the summer and plowing snow in the winter now for the last 2 years now, except I’ve never actually worked in the industry. I was just wondering if anyone could give me any information about the way that these business owners contract their business. Do they get a year or two contract with each business or is it by the job? Also, in either of the two scenarios how much money would be considered going rate to their customers? Thanks in advance for the information.

Article by Donald Dubay

There are some cases where a shrub could be removed for some kind of reason. This could be used for helping to plant something in another way or to possibly get something to go from one property to another. Removing a shrub from an area can be important to do for shrub care. Removing it the right way can help to keep the shrub from being damaged.

It will help to first take a look at a good space for digging for getting a shrub out. A good digging process should involve a diameter that is a few feet in size from around the shrub. This is used to ensure that the roots of the shrub will not be damaged while it is being taken care of. This is so the shrub can be taken out carefully and without any problems.

A big point about shrub care involves how the shrub will need to be removed with a proper vehicle. A good truck can be used here. This includes removing the shrub by pulling it out through a chain that is strung around the build of the shrub. This should be used after the roots are free and able to come out.

The reason why this process is used comes from how it can be tough to handle. It might end up being tough and hard to handle due to the high weight that comes with a shrub like this. Getting a shrub removed should involve getting the shrub handled with as much pressure as possible.

The chain should be near a middle part of the shrub that is a few inches from the ground. This will be used to help with ensuring that the shrub can be dragged out without any problems.

The truck or other large vehicle can be driven forward as soon as the roots and free and the chain is tied up. This can be used to get the shrub out.

Proper shrub care should be used after this process is done. This care should involve checking on all of the things on the shrub and to see that the roots are safe and not damaged. Also, the area that the shrub used to be in should be replanted with new soil and grass seed to help with covering up the spot where the shrub was. It may take a while to get this to work but it can still be worth it.

This is a big point of shrub care that anyone should review. This will work to make it so anyone will have an easier time with getting a shrub to be moved from one place to another. This will make it easy for the entire thing to work in a completely new area

Question by Sara: What kind of shrubs or bushes would be good to plant in front of a bay window?
Need some ideas of what to plant in the front of our house. We have a strip that runs the length of the house that we will be filling in with various shrubs and bushes. We have on big bay window and need something that will fit in front of it without going above the window.
We live in North Dakota. Would like to have perennials. Don’t plan on replanting each year. The window is maybe three feet off the ground.
Would like something with a little color sometime during the year.

How about some real information. Where do you live, what zone, how long is the planting area, how high is the bottom of the window, are you looking for perennials or will you be planting new every year? There is no way to give advice without some specific information.

Article by Tim Birch

Deciduous shrubs are among the most versatile of all garden plants. Whether used to frame architecture, provide privacy or attract birds, deciduous shrubs are an indispensable part of the garden and are the starting point of great landscape design. In most cases deciduous shrubs are very low maintenance. In fact, most will thrive for years with only occasional pruning.

Deciduous shrubs offer year round interest in the garden. Along with their vibrant flowers, they offer lush summer foliage and brilliant fall colors. What many gardeners don’t realize are the winter attributes of deciduous shrubs. For example, the red twig dogwood has amazing red bark which contrasts strikingly against white snow and stands out among the barren winter landscape. Many shrubs, such as several species of viburnum, are fruit bearing and will produce colorful berries which last though the fall and winter.

Formal landscape designs may call for shrubs which are small and respond well to frequent pruning, such as daphne, privet and cotoneaster. Gardens which are meant to be informal and have a more natural feel should be planted with shrubs which, if allowed to grow, become unruly such as viburnum, spirea and forsythia. Specimen shrubs are those which have very distinct, eye catching qualities and are able to stand out as individual plants. Often, interestingly shaped or dwarf evergreens are used as specimen shrubs but there are deciduous shrubs which can have dramatic effects in the landscape as well. Butterfly bush, for example, with its profuse summer flowers, and witchhazel with its late winter/early spring flowers both can be considered specimens.

Proper planning is essential to a successful shrub planting. Before choosing shrubs for your garden, consider their intended function in the landscape. Shrubs can be used in a number of ways in the landscape. Planted as a hedge, shrubs can act as windbreaks, screens which provide privacy or to delineate sections of a property. Hedges generally consist of one type of shrub a can be both formal and neatly pruned or informal and allowed to grow.

Shrub borders use a variety of shrubs and are designed to be more decorative than useful. Plant an array of shrub sizes and shapes in the border. Start with a back drop of larger shrubs. Lower growing shrubs can then be planted between and in front the taller shrubs. Include plants which during different times of the season. While most bloom in the spring, some shrubs, hydrangea, bloom in late summer. Rather than using one of many species of shrubs in the border, use a few different varieties and repeat patterns which seem to work well. There are several distinct shapes of shrubs; columnar, globular, weeping, spreading, and pyramidal. When planting in a narrow space or on the corner of a tall building, columnar (or tall and narrow) shrubs should be utilized. Spreading shrubs are low growing and are well suited to a slope planting. Also, be aware of the shrub’s hardiness to be sure it will survive the winter.

When contemplating color for your garden don’t limit your thinking to the flowers. For much of the season green is the dominant color in the garden so chose shrubs with interesting foliage. There are many shades of green available to the gardener, from light pale greens to darker blue greens. There are also variegated varieties which can brighten up shady spots. Colors which are opposite on the color wheel will work well together, such as yellow and purple. White flowering shrubs can stand out on their own and, much like variegated foliage, are effective in brightening up shady spaces.

One characteristic of shrubs which is often overlooked while planning a garden is their mature height. Improper placement of shrubs is a main reason for unnecessary transplants and pruning. Deciduous shrubs grow quickly and plants which are 4′ at the nursery could very well end up being 15′ tall in a few years.

Shrubs should be planted soon after they are purchased. If this is not possible, keep the roots moist while the plant is out of the ground. Spring and fall are ideal times to plant new shrubs as the temperatures are cooler. When you’re ready to plant follow these general guidelines. Dig a hole twice the diameter of the root ball and just as deep. Place the plant in the hole making sure that the top of the root ball meets the existing grade of the garden. Never plant shrubs too low or too high, this a major cause of premature plant decline. If the roots are wrapped in natural burlap it won’t need to be removed, just pull it way from the trunk of the plants and tuck it down into the hole. Back fill about half way with a mix of existing soil, peat moss and compost or manure. At this point, water and let the soil settle. This will eliminate any air pockets and will water the deep roots immediately. Finish backfilling and construct a saucer around the trunk of the shrub and water again. Taller shrubs on an exposed windy site may require staking.

The standard rule of thumb when pruning deciduous shrubs is to prune those which bloom before July immediately after they’ve finished blooming. This gives them nearly an entire year to develop new bud-bearing branches. Prune those which bloom after July in the winter or early spring. Prune selectively. Remove any branches which grow inward toward the trunk or crisscrossing each other. Thinning out old branches and cutting back those that have become long and leggy will renew the shrub. By removing about one-third of the shrub’s old growth will result in a huge flush of healthy new growth.

With hundreds of shrubs to choose from, deciding what to plant can become overwhelming. Find shrubs which you like and use those. Include in you garden planning a visit to your local nursery or arboretum to become familiar with how shrubs grow; you may come across shrubs you don’t recognize which inspire new design ideas.

Lawn care is a lot of work and mowing your lawn and up keeping your gardens can be a lot of work especially during summer. So how do you know if you need a professional lawn care company? It’s simple, if your lawn and gardens and are overgrowing then you you could use some help. Basic lawn maintenance services are surprisingly affordable as lawn care companies have the tools to do it not only fast, but they also do a good job for cheep.

If your grass is spotty and brown then that might be an indication that you need some help. If you don’t know the different types of grass you can grow in certain soils then you may have problems in the future. Professionals can also tell you how often you should water your lawn and gardens which is important and unique for every climate area, grass type, and soil condition.

Mowing

Allowing you lawn to overgrow not only looks bad but it kills grass when it falls over and shades other grass seedlings. Use a sharp blade lawn mower of good quality. Mulching lawn mowers are even better as they will chop up the grass and reuse it as grass fertilizer.

Watering

Adequate water is incredibly important. You need to how much water your specific grass type needs. If your unsure you can ask your lawn care service company. Of course, you can always find a discreet spot and put a shovel into the ground and fell the soil with your hand. You will need to water you lawn more in the summer months and reduce it in the fall.

Fertilizers

Fertilizing will not only make your grass greener but it will also help grass seeds germinate faster. This faster germination makes the grass healthier in its infancy as well as in its adulthood, not to mention the benefits of sending off Rhizomes, Stolons and Tillers Making an all around healthier grass. Generally speaking fertilizers should be applied 4 times per year every 2 months. You should make your first application 30 days before growing season starts.

Aerating

In order for grass to grow the soil needs water, nutrients and air. For this reason you will benefit from aerating the soil occasionally because the mowed grass can clog and block air from entering the soil. There are several tools for this including tine fork, lawn scarifier, or just a regular pitch fork all of which can be found in your local home and garden shop

Lawn weeding

Each time you cut your lawn walk around for a few minutes with a de-weeding tool and take out the more obvious large weeds. You must remove them from the roots up. After a while this will add up and you lawn will be more or less weed free.

Create your own DIY guide at www.howcast.com or produce your own Howcast spots with the Howcast Filmmakers Program at www.howcast.com Make everyone in your neighborhood green with envy over your lush lawn with these landscaping secrets. To complete this How-To you will need: A soil test Fertilizer Water Sharp lawn mower blades Step 1: Test your soil Test your soil to find out what nutrients it needs. Garden centers often sell do-it-yourself kits, or you can arrange a test through the Cooperative Extension System, a national agriculture network. Find a nearby Extension office on the USDA web site. Step 2: Fertilize carefully Don’t put too much fertilizer out at one time; one pound of actual nitrogen per 1000 square feet is a good rule of thumb, but follow the directions on your package. After fertilizing, lightly water your lawn to wash any excess off the blades and to help the fertilizer reach the roots. Step 3: Give your grass enough water Give your lawn about one inch of water per week. If it’s really hot out, give it an inch of water every three to five days. A can set outside will tell you how much rainwater your lawn has gotten; time how long it takes for the can to fill up one inch. Tip: Many Extension web sites have guidelines on the optimum water …

Question by JJ: How do you mow the edges of the lawns around pavement or bushes?
I’m renting a property with a lawn and a lawn mower included. I was wondering how to properly mow the edges of lawns around the concrete pavements and bushes. Is it safe to mow onto the pavement or from the pavement onto the lawn? I’m afraid to damage the blades.

Best answer:

Answer by andrewxc
Get a trimmer (weed-whacker). They can run anywhere from $ 50 up to $ 200.
You can get them in Electric- or Gas-powered. The Gas-powered usually take a mixture of gas and oil, so make sure you know what you need before you get it.

If you want to be the envy of the neighborhood with a dense, green, and lush lawn through all types of weather conditions, it is essential for you to be aware of proper watering techniques. Not only will you reduce your chance of disease and insect infiltration, but you will also conserve water. Be proactive with your sprinkler schedule and station times. If we have been getting some rain, which you see every now and then in the Boise Idaho area, cut back the water you are putting on your lawn. If it has been hot and dry out, crank it up and your lawn will thank you. You must also take the soil type into consideration.

Certain types of soil require more water than others. Sand doesn’t retain moisture and your lawn will need to be watered more frequently if rooted in sandy soil. This goes for most of you living in Eagle, Star, and Middleton. Water as infrequently as possible. But when you do water, really soak it so water gets down to the roots. Frequent watering promote a shallower root system and weeds. Deep roots help your lawn win the fight against extremely hot temperatures and disease. When temperatures soar, you will need to water more frequently. Lawns that are rooted in clay should be watered every three days and lawns that have a sand base should be watered every other day.

Given a choice, water early in the day when lawns are normally wet from dew. Don’t be that guy watering your lawn in the middle of the day when it is 100 degrees out because most of your water will evaporate before it has a chance to get down to the roots. Watering at night increases the chances of some diseases gaining a foothold. Watering early in the day allows more water to reach the root zone. Everyone’s sprinkler system puts down different amounts of water due to the type of sprinkler, the size of nozzle on the sprinkler, the water pressure, and because of the different degrees of overlapping. If you are a lawn nerd, you can place coffee cans or some sort of straight-sided containers throughout the lawn to measure water application rates. Then you can adjust your stations accordingly to avoid flooding some areas, or leaving other areas of your lawn feeling left out. If you are celebrating the cheap irrigation water we receive in Boise Idaho by overwatering your lawn, fungal disease will set in and weeds will flourish. Allow the surface soil to dry out for one inch in depth between watering to kill off new weeds and insect larvae. Under watering is obviously not a good thing either. One way to tell you have been neglecting your lawn’s watering needs is that your grass will turn a bluish color (before it turns brown). Also, if you walk on the grass it won’t spring back and you will be able to see your footprints. Who wants crispy grass? If this condition occurs, I would water immediately to prevent it from entering a stage of dormancy, which will cause it to turn brown. But that’s just me. Don’t water your lawn the day you plan to have your grass cut, your lawn will thank you.

I bet they just cut them like the same way we cut hedges and stuff like that. It was a lot harder though!!

So you want to create a fascinating landscape garden around your home? It may sound so easy, but it’s not. Putting your dream garden into reality always require proper landscaping planning so you won’t end up delaying its execution because of increased cost and other problems.

Even if you will to do the task yourself, you still need to plan everything from day one. Careful planning results to a well-designed landscape that will surely bring pleasure to your family and will increase the value of your property. Remember: it isn’t just about placing trees and plants around your home. It is rather an art involving conscious organization of your outdoor space to make it not just pleasing to the eyes but a truly enjoyable place to stay in.

Set your goals

An American like you will surely spend big bucks for their home and building landscaping. To avoid putting much of that money to waste, you should set a goal and focus on realizing that. Also, you must understand not just how but why you landscape. Among the main goals of landscaping are:

• To develop and organize the area around your home for maximum use and human satisfaction

• To create a harmonious visual relationship between your house and the yard.

• To minimize landscape maintenance to a more practical level.

Create a Landscape Design

So you goal has been set. The next thing you must do is to create the landscape design you want for your yard. This process can be way too easy if you have landscaping software. Nevertheless, you can use a piece of paper and colored pencils to begin sketching and designing your landscape. Here’s how:

• Create a simple, scaled drawing of the site. Sketch its utilities, walks, and driveways and note where paved surfaces are. Then, point out the areas where flower beds, patios, vegetable garden and play areas will be situated.

• By drawing arrows, indicate sun angles as well as prevailing winds for winter and summer. Make sure to circle the place in your yard that need wind protection or shade.

• Highlight areas where landscaping height or width is restricted. Also, emphasize the place where drainage is poor and the areas with standing water. Note also the trees and shrubs already existing in your yard.

While sketching your landscape design, consider the needs and habits of your family. Make a design that best satisfies not just their needs but their hearts’ desire. Discuss with your family the things they want to incorporate and prioritize the most important aspects.

Survey available Materials

Once you’ve come up with a fascinating design, what you need to do next is to review the materials needed and find out how much the whole project will cost. List down the price of all the materials you need to complete the project. These include benches, plants, rocks, the bricks and many more. Also, include in your computation the labor cost. When you already know how much you need to spend for your home landscaping, you can now decide when to push through with the project.

Those are the basic steps involved in every landscaping planning. So if you want a home that’s beautiful in and out, give it a good interior design matched with an attractive landscape. And in every landscaping project bear in mind that proper planning is the key.

Article by Brian Wong

When plants are left alone in their own environment, they can reproduce exactly as they were meant to because all the necessary conditions are present. When plants are in an aquarium, you will have to learn how to succeed in the reproduction of plants. The best way to get plants to reproduce in a freshwater planted aquarium is simple. Give the plants what they would get in nature.

Due to their sturdiness, some plants will reproduce alone even in an aquarium. Other plants will need for the aquarium owner to help duplicate growing conditions. Reproduction in plant world is done either asexual or sexually. Sexual is usually how the plant reproduces in its natural surroundings. This is done through the flower or seed part of the plant. Plants that reproduce through asexual means or vegetative methods are plants that reproduce through artificial means otherwise known as help from the aquarist.

Most underwater plants are asexual which makes them much easier to grow, reproduce and care for. When a plant that uses asexual means to reproduce, what happens is that the plant’s runners create slips. A runner is basically just a stem or outgrowth growing horizontally rather than vertically. When one of these runners in turn grow a slip, that slip can be reproduced as an entirely new plant. This method is similar to putting a cutting from a houseplant into a glass of water. The cutting will produce a slip. When that slip is planted, it grows another plant the same as the one it came from. Underwater slips can be removed from the original plant in an aquarium and replanted. Plants that reproduce with runners are usually quite fertile and will grow rapidly.

Aquarium plants also grow offsets which is simply a growth from the original plant that can taken off and planted in a new location. Left on their own, most plants will reproduce giving the right means to do so. However, if the plants fail to propagate alone, the aquarium keeper can reproduce artificially. This means the aquaris must gently lift up the plant from its setting and separate a part of the plant from itself and then replant it in either another area of the same aquarium or another tank. This method is referred to as cutting and while it’s one of the easiest way to double your plants, you will have to be sure that there’s enough of the stem to fit below an inch of substrate. Otherwise, the plant can fail to thrive.

Don’t forget that even plants living below water have to be pruned. Without pruning, some of the bulky plants will keep smaller plants from getting the correct amount of light needed to grow.

by s.alt

Autumn Gold

When it comes to garden plants autumn can be one of the most stunning seasons. Not only are most garden borders still bursting with late flowering perennials, but also as the light changes and the temperature starts to drop towards winter, garden plants are starting their preparation for slumber. This can take different forms for different plants, many will lose their leaves or die back completely, but even fail safe garden evergreens can start to show different color hues as autumn progresses.

Autumn doesn’t need to spell the end of garden pleasures. You simply need to look at what you’ve got and use it to its best potential. Take the patio – An hour or so of late summer sun facilitates morning coffee on the patio, lunch al fresco or evening drinks. If the summer planters are past their best then give them a make over or move them somewhere to finish their finale and plant up a tub or two with some autumn bedding. Make the most of any sunny hours and use overcast days to tidy, prune and prepare the garden for the season ahead.

Flower and Foliage Power

Autumn bedding is widely available at garden centers and nurseries during September. Look out for vibrant pink hardy cyclamen, ornamental cabbages, dianthus, pansies and pretty violas all of which will make an instant colorful display.

Don’t disregard the foliage plants though. This year one of the star performers at the RHS Flower Shows were the Heucheras. After some clever breeding by the plant experts there are a wonderful array of foliage colors in these beautiful plants. Use them creatively in contemporary containers and within the garden borders to create a striking and colorful display. Heucheras are useful for shady areas of the garden, they are hardy and most have attractive flower spikes in early summer and form a domed shaped cushion of leaves. Plant them at the front of the flower border too for colorful cushions of foliage that remain all winter and burst into life with spikes bearing dainty pale summer flowers that dance in the breeze.

Other great plants for autumn bedding include the evergreen herbs such as thyme, sage, rosemary and even semi evergreen plants such as lavender. Use these for contrasting textures in containers and under plant them with a variety of spring flowering bulbs such as crocus to extend the season of interest. You can continue to harvest the edible herbs as required over the winter. You can also replant these herbs into the garden in spring or replant into fresh compost in a larger container as they mature.

Ready for planting

Gardeners can really plant to their hearts content this autumn. After a wet and warm summer the soil is in the very best condition to encourage roots of newly planted trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs. If you plan to plant anything this season do it sooner rather than later, the longer the roots have to establish into the warm, moist garden soil, the better they will thrive through the winter to give a fabulous display in spring.

If I explained this in my collegiate terms, I don’t think you’d understand this because you’re clearly too young. (Jonas brothers?) There are pores on the leaf that takes in light, when it does, it takes on CO2 and converts into O using the energy from the light. O is emitted from the pores back into the air. This is good because you need O to survive.
